Phil Morrison
Phil Morrison is a director known for creating some of the most recognizable and culturally enduring commercial campaigns of the past two decades. He originated and directed Apple’s iconic “Mac vs. PC” campaign as well as Allstate’s long-running “Mayhem” campaign. In episodic TV, Phil directed episodes for Mike White’s HBO series, “Enlightened” and the cult classic “The Adventures of Pete and Pete,” and was the primary director of Comedy Central’s “Upright Citizens Brigade.” His music videos include several for Yo La Tengo and Sonic Youth, and his collaborations with Kim Gordon include “X-Girl Video” and the film/performance work “Perfect Partner.”
His approach aims for nuance and emotional authenticity, with intense attention to non-cliched casting and performance; and a hope for frames and cutting rhythms that are both surprising and right for the commercial.
In his feature debut, Junebug, Phil directed Amy Adams in her first major feature film role, a breakthrough performance that earned her an Academy Award nomination and multiple awards. The film received widespread critical acclaim and recognition, including an Independent Spirit Award win, a Critics’ Choice Award, a National Society of Film Critics Award, a Sundance Special Jury Prize for Acting, the Cannes Film Festival Semaine de la Critique and additional honors from major critics’ circles and festivals.
Across advertising, film and TV, Phil ’s work is distinguished by its emotional authenticity, strong performances, and enduring cultural impact.
