Martin de Thurah makes films that are highly crafted, emotionally honest, and much funnier than you expect. The Danish director, screenwriter, and photographer trained at the National Danish filmschool, where a background in painting and photography shaped everything that followed: the light, the composition, the moments that catch you off guard.
His film career began with the short “Young Man Falling,” selected for Critics’ Week at Cannes, before he became a sought-after music video director for artists including James Blake, Kanye West, Robyn, Fever Ray, David Byrne and St. Vincent, and Feist. His commercial work brought further recognition: twice named Commercial Director of the Year by the Directors Guild of America, 35 D&AD awards, and an 11 Lions at Cannes — including the Grand Prix for Craft — for his Under Armour film “Phelps.”
